SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) — A global technology outage caused by a faulty software update has impacted businesses across the Ozarks.
The glitch impacted banks and government agencies and delayed flights at the Springfield-Branson National Airport.
"When it comes to your personal login, while you may not be able to access your accounts, it doesn't mean that your account has been compromised. It depends on which systems they are running."
— Dr. Xiang Guo
Cyber expert Dr. Xiang Guo, the Department Head of Information Technology at Missouri State University, says a misconfiguration like this can cause more problems than a cyberattack.
Dr. Guo's Recommendations:
- Don't panic - this is a system outage, not a security breach
- Regularly back up important data to external drives
- Be patient as systems are being restored
- Contact your IT support if you experience prolonged issues
"This update has a batch where one file got corrupted," said Dr. Guo. "The corruption caused the system instabilities, and they only affected Windows-based machines. Once this OS gets corrupted, you get a blue screen of death, so basically, your machine goes down, and you can do nothing with it."
